2 Poems For 16th Birthday
- Sweet 16 Birthday Poems -

Yellow Striped Red Tulip
I wrote these 2 original poems for 16th birthday for our teenagers. You can adapt it to any age, especially the teen years.

Sweet 16.

It's a good time in life. There's so much to look forward to.

But let's not kid ourselves.

The reality is, there are a lot of dangers at sixteen.

Remember when we were teenagers, it wasn't always easy. In fact, many of us look back at our teenage years as some of the most difficult times of our lives. But somehow, by God's good grace, we made it through.

You can read the stories of 2 teenagers, a boy and a girl, who received great responsibilities as teenagers.

Feel free to make changes in these poems to best fit the person.

84. Sweet 16 !!!

     by Paul Berchtold, February, 2011

Sweet 16, how fun, how free!
Full of life and energy!
Ups and downs though quite a few,
Remember God always cares for you.

We love you too, of this be sure,
God keep you holy, God keep you pure,
Because it's God who loves you best,
May you find in him your rest.

We thank the Lord, you are his gift,
To him your needs in prayer we lift,
Whatever happens, we love you so,
In every way, we hope you grow.

Our dearest ___*___, we daily pray,
That God bless you in every way,
That you be strong, to God be true,
We're so very proud of you!

May your days be filled with grace,
Love and joy in every place,
And wishing you, we really mean,
Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen!

* You can include the actual name of the person, or, "son", "daughter", "brother", "sister", "friend", "angel", etc.

85. Sixteen and Growing!

     by Paul Berchtold, February, 2011

Happy Birthday, you're 16 and going,
Every day we see you growing!
We thank the Lord, from our heart,
In our lives you're a special part.

Love is a gift that keeps on giving,
We love you every day you're living,
Our love won't stop no matter what,
Whether you're rich or live in a hut.

In true wisdom may you grow,
And lessons learn, so you may know,
In your life, your work and labor,
How to serve God and neighbor.

God has for you, a special role
We pray you use your energy full,
Serving others is true success,
Which opens doors, so He may bless.

May you be generous, loving, kind,
Strong in body, soul, and mind,
For what you give, comes back more,
A life worth living, like never before.

Us older folks have stories to tell,
It's fun being young, seems all is well,
But there are choices that can be tough,
The good and bad, there's plenty enough. When you're tempted, the devil's shoving,
God is stronger, and always loving,
Should you fall, to him confess,
He helps us rise, and wants to bless.

We all have things to still improve,
All the years through which we move,
There will be joy, and some trial,
Through it all, God help you smile.

Yes, through it all, you make us proud,
Thanking God for what he endowed,
You're his gift to us, our ___***___ dear.
Happy Birthday, with sweetest cheer!

*** Here you can include the person's name. Or, "son", "daughter", "brother", "sister", "friend", "angel", and so forth. Feel free to make changes to make the poem appropriate for the recipient.

The 16th Birthday is a Mile-Stone

There was no such word "teenager" until the last 100 years or so. People went from child or student to adulthood. People went from helping on the farm, to working on the farm, and eventually running it.

My grandfather ran the farm for his mother and younger children when his father died - when he was 16 - as you see in Grandpa Stories.

In ancient cultures, there have been many "growing up" ceremonies, to welcome a person into adulthood. Some of these customs are still seen today.

Birthdays in Western Culture

Many cultures do not celebrate birthdays as we do.

To a degree, our western culture does have some ceremonies of acknowledgment, such as graduation from grammar school and high school, which is more a class affair.

Birthdays give us an opportunity to give special attention to each individual in the important milestones in their life.

Poems for 16th Birthday - Teenagers

We must love and pray for our teenagers. God does. God bless each each and every one of them.

I admire them, they're so full of life, brimming with zest, and overflowing with energy. They are burning with zeal, while some of us older folks are getting a bit apathetic - if not cynical.

They have a lot of potential. Let us pray they use God's gifts wisely.

They want to change the world and make a difference! Many are bursting with so much late night energy.

Then their parents wonder why they're so dog-tired the next morning!

Changes, Choices, and Challenges

The reality is, it can be real tough for today's teenagers. They're going through many changes. They are facing many choices. The world has become increasingly, a more dangerous place.

The teenage suicide rate is higher than ever before.

Growing Pains

Teenagers can have it really rough. And they can be really rough on their parents, too. And it's easy for parents to be really rough on them.

So parents, teachers, friends - it's not enough for us to say a nice word or two on their birthdays.

Yes, it is important to show them our love and appreciation. Some parents neglect even this.

But it is also our duty to be open and honest with them, to prepare them for the realities of the world, and the changes they're experiencing, the choices they are facing, and the decisions they will be making.

Growing Together

It's important:

  • to tell them of our unconditional love, not matter what thoughtless mistakes they make,
  • to be the open door - when they're ready - to answer their questions, to be a shoulder to cry on,
  • and above all, to pray for them, to tell them how much God unconditionally loves them all their lives, no matter how many mistakes they make, and is always willing to help them in whatever difficulty, no matter how difficult the circumstances.

Birthdays are a Teachable Moment

No matter how tough a time for everyone involved, the teenage years go fast. Really fast.

You're 13, then 16, then 19.

At 16, it's not too long and you'll be gone from home and school, becoming a leader for the next generation.

Every birthday is a teaching moment:

  • an opportunity to encourage the recipient,
  • give assurance of our prayers,
    • prayers of thanksgiving to God for their lives
    • prayers to God asking his protection and blessings
  • an opportunity to remind them of our unconditional love,
  • and show our appreciation - especially on birthdays!

Thank your stars!
